For Joanna Bennet: A 7-Character Jueju --
"Releasing Negative Emotions"
-- Chinese Poem by 波浪男兒 'Wave-Chaser Guy'
-- Translated by Frank C Yue
Fore'er here are changing Things --
Vast seas may become green fields.
Like floating plants that take wings --
To death (... and LIFE !) each life yields
With lots of tears shedding still.
Now, should one succeed or fall,
Should one with right or wrong stay --
This is pre-destined for all.
Loving non-attach'd is the Way --
One's half-sorrows then would fade.
A brief collection of my attempted English renditions of selected Chinese poems, both contemporary and classical. (Each original classical Chinese poem may be presented in both the traditional and simplified forms, followed by the English translation.) Comments and suggested amendments welcome. (But I may not have the time to respond to every comment.) I am a follower of Andrew W F Wong's excellent blog "Classical Chinese Poems in English".

This secular world is never fair; So, take heed only from those you care.
衹須理會有心人;
歡呼暗箭與明槍;
身心人各不相同;

TO SIU MEI MEI (Joanna Bennet)-- FROM UNCLE
-- by Frank C Yue
This secular world is never fair;
So, take heed only from those you care.
For most things, simply one cannot control;
Let not others tell you when to "sit" or "roll".
But I do let them keep their lies, laughs and jeers;
Slings and arrows could only give me more cheers.
(No, not tears)
Sensitive hearts shall need extra armour;
Not all the paths lead to the rose arbour.
Now, let bygones bygones be --
For they are them, I am me.
Angels we all should be, could be --
Meanwhile, I'll be happy, worry free.

Boundless, the Sky is so blue; The wilderness seems boundless, too.
CHI LE GE: "SONG OF THE CHI LE"
-- by Anon (Northern Dynasty)
-- Translated by Frank C Yue
The Chi Le plain out spreads by
Where the Yin Mountain does lie.
Like a woolen tent hangs the Sky,
Covering the Wilderness from on high.
Boundless, the Sky is so blue;
The Wilderness seems boundless, too.
Rippling through the pastures, north winds blow;
The grass bends low, the cattle and sheep, to show.

the following culled from baidu.com:

杜甫 兩個黃鸝鳴翠柳, 一行白鷺上青天。 Two yellow nightingales on the green willow sang side by side;
JUJUE : "(7-character) Quatrain"
-- by DU FU (712-770)
-- Translated by Frank C Yue
Two yellow nightingales on the green willow sang side by side;
The wind, a string of white herons up the azure skies did ride.
O'er thousands-year-old western range snow-caps my window por'd;
O, How I longed to journey ten thousand miles east in the boats moored by my door!

KE ZHI : "My Guest is A-Visiting"
("Pleased that County Official Cui is passing by")
-- by DU FU (712-770)
-- Translated by Frank C Y
To the south and north of my hut is floodwater of spring;
Day in, day out, I see flocks of sand-gull on the wing.
The flowery path has never been swept, my friend -- till now.
With my thatched gate wide open -- I will receive you, how's how!
Far away is the market-place, and quite tasteless, my meal;
In humble abode, only old un-strained wine has some appeal.
To a hearty drink shall we invite the old man next door?
Call him over the fence, and let's the last bottle out pour!

Now released, what am I like drifting in the wind? A speck of a sand-gull, between heav'n and earth seen!
LU YE SHU : "One Night on My Journey Writing about My Feelings"
-- by DU FU(712-770)
-- Translated by Frank C Yue
Blow'ng gently ashore, the breeze bends small grass in sight;
Sleepless, I'm in a lone boat with tall mast at night.
The vast plain seems much wider beneath the starry dome;
The moon swims amidst the great river's watery foam.
Has all my fame solely on all my poems depend'd?
With old age and ill health, all official posts should end.
Now released, what am I like drifting in the wind?
A speck of a sand-gull, between heav'n and earth seen!
Translator's Note:
Du Fu was unable to realize his political ideals in court and forced to return to his village with his family upon royal cessation of his official appointment, due to admonishments by jealous high officials; he was neither too old nor in ill health then.

Against biting winds, high skies, monkeys sadly wail; O'er clear water, white sand-bar, birds in circles sail.
DENG GAO : "CLIMBING ON HIGH"
-- by DU FU (712-770)
-- Translated by Frank C Yue
Against biting winds, high skies, monkeys sadly wail;
O'er clear water, white sand-bar, birds in circles sail.
“Xiao, xiao!” From boundless, balding trees leaves a-falling,
Towards this way, the endless Great River's a-rolling.
Along ceaseless sad Autumns, I'm a rolling stone;
Ailing, at my life's end, I climb this tower alone.
Hardship and lament, to hoar temple hairs consign'd –-
Too ill, of late I just forgo my cup of wine!
