(Each original classical Chinese poem may be presented in both the traditional and simplified forms, followed by the English translation.) Comments and suggested amendments welcome. 《自古美人如名將》 清 • 趙艷雪
自古红颜如名將,
不許人間見白頭。
Since times of old, the Great Beauties --
Like Gen'rals "Victorious-Ever",
To grow old (-- because of duty) --
They are simply allowed never.

<這兩句七絕,來歷於文獻中難以考查,據載出自 清初 趙艷雪 手筆,乃唱和水西莊主人 查為仁 妻子 金至雲 病逝故時念妻而作的《悼亡姬》,當時文人雅士相繼唱和,而「美人自古如名將,不許人間見白頭」就見於此間。>
<這裡一說趙艷雪,此人乃文人 佟蔗村 之妾,才貌雙全,佟蔗村 為因愛妾而建艷雪樓作他倆詩賦互吟、纏綿其間之用。趙艷雪 籍悼 金至雲 身故同時亦唏噓人生有涯,詩中意謂縱你有閉月羞花之貌,力拔山河之能,也難歒歲月催人之命運。>
<是借友故時對時光流逝的嘆息,以「不許」二字抒發對人生苦短的悲情,充分反眏出她正陶醉她和 佟蔗村 的纏綿生活及留戀感受。>
