My Sister: She Means Home to Me.

-- by JC
(Age 10, Grade 5 student, written in 2013)
-- Transcribed by Frank C Yue

I am writing about my sister because she means home to me.

Her name is C and she is seven.

With my sister, I learn about love, patience and encourageement. I learn about love because one time, I had a really bad stomachahe and she wrote me a "get well soon" card. I felt very happy and loved when I needed it most. I learn to love her by taking care of her, especially when she was small. (79)

I learn about patience because when I was three and she was only a few months old, she saw me playing with a toy. All of a sudden she ran up, grabbed it, and ran away. After a while, she came to grab another toy from me. I learned to be patient because I understood that she was still really small. (140)

I learned about encouragement when she told me not to be nervous for my (154) first piano exam. She told me I would be all right and do pretty good, and I did! Her words warmed my heart and I got good marks in my first piano exam!

I also really wanted a brother or sister because before she was born, I had no one to play with. That is why I love my sister and she means home to me.

note by grandpa typist:

one late afternoon this week, i was delighted to find a photocopy of three pages of a stapled manuscript, written in pencil, of the above short essay lying on my 14-year old grandson's desk -- as my "cook" and i went to his house, bearing delicious, steaming home-made dishes for their family dinner. this copy was obviously meant for the eyes of the parents. (as there was no one in the house at that hour yet, i smuggled the piece back home and did some typing on my laptop. the manuscript will be returned to its original abode on our next visit.)( -- pardon? as always of course, i'm the designated long-time, faithful, kungfu-trained "chauffeur-and-body guard" for the VIP cook.)

to be truthful, the original article was just one long continuous paragraph. and the figures shown within brackets above are presumably word counts. (for school work, a minimum length of the essay is mandatory.)

E'ening comes around, it's e'ening!

"The Classic of Poems: National Verses:
Northern Songs: E'ening Comes Around, It's E'ening"
-- Translated by Frank C Yue

E'ening comes around, it's e'ening!
But you ain't returning home, why?
For the sake of our king,
Till it's dark we'll wait by the way-side.

E'ening comes around, it's e'ening!
But you ain't returning home, why?
For the sake of our king,
By toiling in the mud we abide.

the following culled from the net:

Treasure Qi and Essence

"Health Cultivation and Maintenance Poem"
-- by Gong Tingxian (1522~1619)
-- Translated by Frank C Yue

Treasure Qi and Essence, cultivate Positive Attitude,
Curb deep thoughts, burning desires, and burden your mind less still.
When eating you should only fill up your stomach half-way,
Over you, never let exotic flavours hold sway.
Seventy-percent sober you should remain -- drink mindfully,
Never drink too much and only drink occasionally.

Ne'er too seriously take e'erything,
For jokes let hearty laughter take wing.
Go with Joy and Pleasure always,
Don't let Anger ruin your days.
Let Frown'd Brows, Cold Shoulders pass by,
For the Changes and Frauds, don't ask why.

I'll continue -- to myself true --
O'er a hundred Springs, treading through.

this is practical and sound advice. Gong tingxian lived until he was 97, probably more than double than the average life expectancy of his contemporaries!

Flanked by clouds passing, The Moon

"Flanked by clouds passing, The Moon"
-- by Monk Yong Ming (Song Dynasty)
-- Translated by Frank CYue

Flanked by clouds passing,
The Moon seems to move unceasing.
From a boat sailing,
The coast appears to be rambling.

In their truthful state,
The objects do not move at all --
But then more and more,
Our mind is leading us astray.

Spring is just like wine

          紅塵看透
            別無求
              靜候
                春
工作忙的由上而下讀;
what a fantastic chinese language!
i just rec'd the above thought-provoking chinese poem  很好的一首「鑽石詩」from my wife's group of old classmates of some 50 years (since primary school!).
an attempted translation follows.
"Spring is Just Like Wine"
-- A 'Reversible Poem' (2 Moods) by Unknown
-- Translated by Frank C Yue
Spring is just like wine,
So smooth, caressing, fine.
Time is like a river flowing,
I think of the past whilst my back turning.
Happiness, joy, sadness and lament are no more,
Past events gone, still the flowers are like before.
Long lasting is friendship only,
Flowing like the waters endlessly.
Fate brought us together since the old days,
You've been walking by my side all the way.
The morning Sun cradled by coloured clouds,
We loiter in the rain, coming down loud.
Till the red leaves are thick and deep,
Will meet again -- you and I,
We will have tea and wine,
Admire the rocks, and our memories keep.
In fallen petals the ground may be steep'd,
Yet with our sleeves the white clouds we would sweep.
Cheers and laughter non-stopping,
While the red Sun setting
Atop the branch a-sitting...
Detached from the secular world completely,
Desire-less, we all await Spring quietly.

The weather just changes when you expect it least

An Admonitory Essay (Excerpt translation) -- by LU MENGZHENG (946-1011)
-- Translated by Frank C Yue

The weather just changes when you expect it least;
In an instant, along comes disaster or bliss.

Homo sapiens: Know Thy Self and What's In A Name?

Homo sapiens: Know Thy Self and What's

In A Name?

An Amateur Paleontologist

I suppose I am a bit of an amateur paleontologist, now that I mentioned about my small collection of trilobite fossils (in my last e-article). Paleontology is of course the study of life forms existing in prehistoric or geological times as found in the fossils of animals, plants and other organisms.

Biological Classification

A taxon is an organism.
In taxonomy, all biological organisms on Earth, both living or extinct, are defined scientifically into ranks or groups on the basis of common characteristics and are given specific names for identification and study. In the hierarchy of biological classification, there are eight major “taxonomic ranks”.

In the special case of modern humans or Homo sapiens (a subject on which we should all take an interest), the taxonomic ranks in question are listed in descending order as follows:
Domain: ... ,
Kingdom: ...    ,
Phylum/Division: ... ,
Class: ...,
Order: Primates,
Family: Hominidae
Genus: Homo,
Species: Homo sapiens.

What is A “Species”?

A group of animals, or plants, with identical features and a similar mode of life constitutes a distinct population called a “species”. A species is a population of individuals capable of interbreeding to produce similar-looking offspring. Species showing close similarities are grouped into a genus, similar genera into a family, similar families into an order, similar orders into a class, and so on.

What does “Homo sapiens” mean?

For identification purposes, each species is given a two-word Latin name. Take for example, Homo sapiens again.

The first word “Homo” – a noun – is the name of the genus. The generic term “Homo”, meaning “man” (can be male or female), can be used for naming more than one species.

The second word “sapiens” – an adjective – meaning “wise”, may be referred to loosely as the name of the species.

The combination of both the generic name and the specific name (the so-called binominal naming system) identifies a unique species. The human species called “Homo sapiens” refers specifically to the “modern humans”; in Latin the two-word term means “wise man”.

  Photo from Wikipedia.
Basic anatomical features of female and male humans. (These models have had body hair and male facial hair removed and head hair trimmed.)

Why Homo sapiens is A “Wise Man”?

The modern human does have the largest brain among the several species grouped under the genus Homo in the order of Primates. The modern human, Homo sapiens, is the only surviving species that is up-right walking, culture-sharing and possesses effective language and learning skills, etc.
The other four species that were extinct in the genus Homo are:
Homo habilis: evolved circa 2.8 million yrs. ago, use of stone tools. Brains about size of those of chimpanzees.
     H. erectus: cranial size had doubled, first of the hominina to leave Africa from ca. 500,000 yrs. ago, evolving into H. antecessor, H. heidelbergensis and H. neanderthalensis.
     H. heidelbergensis
     H. neanderthalensis (Neanderthals)

It is considered that the modern humans likely first evolved in Africa about 200,000 years ago. They were social animals, they learned how to communicate, make tools and fire, cook foods and clothe themselves. In search of games and a safe and better environment, they gradually spread in small groups as hunter-gatherers in several waves of migration to other parts of the world – first throughout Africa, then Eurasia,  Asia, Europe and the Americas. It is thought that Homo sapiens at some point in time interbred with neanderthals before the latter species had died off.

What Does the Future Hold for Homo sapiens?

With the almost continuous regional conflicts and wars, natural disasters, global warming and its attendant challenges, the probability of nuclear annihilation, impact by giant meteorite and so on, Stephen Hawking has pointed out that interplanetary travel and colonisation would ensure the continuation of the human species.Short orbital flights on a commercial scale will be offered shortly. Astronauts from a handful of technologically advanced countries have been working, experimenting, researching and living for some yeas on board the International Space Station, gathering vital data for prolonged space travel. China has concrete plans to build her own space station and launch lunar explorations. The U.S.A. has also announced her intention to construct a permanent base on the Moon.  Homo sapiens travelling to Mars will be a reality in the near future...

From star dust and a single cell organism, we have indeed come quite a long way. We still have a long, long way to go, if we humans – who are highly intelligent and innovative and still evolving – do not, directly or indirectly, kill off ourselves first on this tiny, fragile blue planet called Earth.

Please handle with love ad care.
