淮左名都,竹西佳处,解鞍少驻初程。过春风十里,尽荠麦青青。自胡马窥江去后,废池乔木,犹厌言兵。渐黄昏、清角吹寒,都在空城。
杜郎俊赏,算而今、重到须惊。纵豆蔻词工,青楼梦好,难赋深情。二十四桥仍在,波心荡冷月无声。念桥边红药,年年知为谁生。

Yangzhou, a city of great fame --
The Zhuxi Pavilion
In sight-seeing, a favourite name.
Now in the first leg of my travels
I take off the saddle
To take a rest (in the shadows).
The Spring breeze blows for three long miles
Where nothing is seen
Except for the wild weeds so green.
After the barbarous horsemen
Had invaded the beautiful land,
Those terraces and trees that still stand,
To mention the word "War" are loathsome.
Slowly, gloomy Dusk descends:
The sad war horn a-blowing,
Its sounds through empty city a-echoing.
Talented Du Mu just loved this place,
Over time and space --
Were the lover-poet here today,
He would be greatly amazed.
Even with Du's exquisite expressions
And, in bawdy-house, his dreams fine,
He could ne'er describe my grievous emotions.
Still here are -- the twenty-four bridges,
The gently rolling waves,
The cold blue Moon, speechless.
O, Do tell me:
By the bridges (I see)
The vibrant red flowers --
For whom are they blooming
Year after year?

淳熙(宋孝宗)三年的冬至,我到了揚州。整夜的雪之後終於轉晴,滿眼都是野生的薺草與麥子。進入揚州城,四處寂寥冷清,望著青綠色的寒冷湖水,天色逐漸昏暗,此時軍營中的號角聲悲涼的響起。我心中感到悲傷難過,感慨如今和往日竟有如此大的差異,於是自己創製了”揚州慢”這首曲子。千巖老人(蕭德藻,南宋初期詩人,姜夔曾向他學詩,後來又娶了他的侄女兒)認為有感嘆國將傾覆(「黍離」為詩經篇名,寫周朝的大夫悲憫皇室傾覆,面對故國到處生滿禾黍的荒涼景象,徘徊不忍離去)的悲痛。
揚州是淮左的著名都會,到了城北知名的竹西亭,這是我第一段旅程的目的,可以暫作歇息了。
過去無限旖旎風光,連綿十里的舞榭歌臺,現在都到哪裡去了呢?只剩下滿眼都是野生的薺草與麥子,綠油油的一大片而已。
紹興卅一年,金兵南侵江淮,揚州被破壞的體無完膚,到處是廢棄的池沼、雜生的喬木,已經十六年了,揚州始終未能重建,這般破敗蕭條的景象使得人們厭惡提起兵事。黃昏時分,淒清的號角聲,在空城中迴蕩不絕,原來應是入夜喧鬧的地方,現在卻讓單調嗚咽的軍中號角替代,真讓人感嘆不已!
古代文學家與揚州關係最密切的就是杜牧了,鑑賞眼光極高的他,看過這春風十里的繁華名都,如果現在重遊,看到這滿眼的薺麥,他必定會驚訝的。
縱使杜牧曾寫過豆蔻詩《贈別》、靑樓夢《遣懷》那樣好的句子,但他的經驗是綺靡風流的,他的才華再好,也體會不到我此刻心情,更寫不出我此刻面對揚州災難而感受到的沉痛。
杜牧筆下的二十四橋也仍然存在,但人事全非,吹簫的美人不在了,夜間取樂的遊人也沒有了,只有波心輕蕩,冷冷的月光悄悄的映照在這寂寞的空橋上。
想想橋邊開著的紅芍藥花,它是為什麼人生長的呢?又有誰去欣賞它呢?>
