西鄙人 北斗七星高,哥舒夜帶刀。 The Dipper's seven stars hang in the sky high; General Ge carries his sabre at night.

北斗七星高,  哥舒夜帶刀。
至今窺牧馬,  不敢過臨洮。

The Dipper's seven stars hang in the sky high;
General Ge carries his sabre at night.
On our ranging horses the Huns still pry;
But they won't cross the border out of fright. 





Translator's Note:
The Dipper here of course refers to The Big/Little Dipper, names of two constellations in the northern hemisphere, otherwise known as The Great/Little Bear, or The Plough,  or Charles' Wain.

哥舒翰(?-757年),唐朝名将,突骑施(西突厥别部)首领哥舒部落人。安史之乱时被安祿山俘虜,後安慶緒殺安祿山,登基為帝,不久,敗於唐軍而逃,將哥舒翰殺害。唐代宗赠太尉,谥曰武愍。
