The flowery path has never been swept, my friend -- till now. With my thatched gate wide open -- I will receive you, how's how!

KE ZHI : "My Guest is A-Visiting"
("Pleased that County Official Cui is passing by")
-- by DU FU (712-770)
-- Translated by Frank C Y

To the south and north of my hut is floodwater of spring;
Day in, day out, I see flocks of sand-gull on the wing.
The flowery path has never been swept, my friend -- till now.
With my thatched gate wide open -- I will receive you, how's how!
Far away is the market-place, and quite tasteless, my meal;
In humble abode, only old un-strained wine has some appeal.
To a hearty drink shall we invite the old man next door?
Call him over the fence, and let's the last bottle out pour!
