"Remembering the Pretty Maid"
TITLE: REMINISCING AT (Great Battle Site) CHIBI
-- SU SHI (1036-1101) (Northern Song Dynasty)

-- Translated by Frank C Yue

The Yangtze rushes toward the east,
Its rolling waves have never cease',
Unto time, washing away
Gallant souls of the bygone day.
To the west of ruin'd old forts stiff,
They say, is the famed Crimson Cliff.
There, the Three-Kingdoms Zhou of Wu,
On Wei's warships wrought grief and woe!
The rugged rocks pierced the clouds low,
Crashing waves spate froth white as snow!
Here, once came fierce combatants brave,
Buried: beaut'ous hills, river -- their grave!

Remember General Zhou in his prime -- With his fair young bride at his side,
Gallant was he, with silk head-crest,
Feather fan -- Zhou was at his best!
As the handsome one laughed and spoke,
The enemy fleet sank in smoke!
Musing on country past, you see,
I laugh at sentimental me.
Because of my lingering care,
To gray early turns all my hair.
Life, to me, is just like a dream --
(Like the Moon dancing on the stream!)
O'er the river, fair Moon comes up -- To the Moon let me raise my cup!
