南山北山樹冥冥，
猛虎白日繞村行。
向晚一身當道食，
山中麋鹿盡無聲。
年年養子在深谷，
雌雄上下不相逐。
谷中近窟有山村， 
長向村家取黃犢。
五陵年少不敢射，
空來林下看行跡。

Woods in both the southern and northern mountains are dense and dark;
In broad daylight a tiger walks 'round a village, leav'ng its mark! The
The beast ev'n lies on beaten paths where it freely feeds toward night;
Deer and small game are muted, often in fright and put to flight.
Then, each year new cubs are born in the deep, isolated dell;
And the male and female big cats each other will not expel.
Near tiger den there are villages up the rice-terraced hill;
From then on, the fierce beasts come and take yellow calves as their kill.
To shoot the tigers, none of the brave young men at Chang-an dares;
They just come and watch at a distance without their hunting wares!
